About this course:

WSG Essentials present the often complex world of Spanish wine in an accessible and engaging way; highlighting “need to know” regions, grape varieties and wine styles. Students explore the culture, cuisine, history, viticulture and winemaking principles behind the most influential wine regions in the world.

Course objective:

1. Understand the key environmental factors and viticultural practices and how they impact the style and quality of each “need to know” wine.
2. Understand the key vinification and winemaking practices that impact the style and quality of each “need to know” wine.
3. Understand the basic tenets of Spanish wine law and recall labeling terms.
4. Know the grape varieties, styles and quality levels of wines produced within the designated appellations.

Course Outline:

Introduction to Spain
- A brief history of Spain
- Climate, soils and topography
- Understanding Spanish wine law
- Reading Spanish wine labels
- Primary grape varieties
- Wine styles and cuisine
Northwestern Spain
- Visit Galicia, part of "Green Spain", where cool weather grapes like Albariño, Godello, and Mencía pair impeccably with the local cuisine
- Take a tour along the Duero River and visit the land of Tempranillo in DO Ribera del Duero and DO Toro and Verdejo from DO Rueda; and be tempted by some of the world's finest cured ham
Northeast Spain
- Discover Rioja, one of Spain's largest and most important appellations
- Learn with Rioja has some of the world's most sought-after wines
- Visit Cataluña, the land of Gaudi, where the wines from DOQ Priorat and DO Montsant showcase the marriage of Garnacha Tinta and Cariñena
- Dive into the specifics of Spain's bubbly Cava and learn how it differs from other sparkling wines
Southern Spain & The Canary Islands
- Learn about the world's largest designation of origin, DO La Mancha, as well as DO Vinos de Madrid, situated just on the outskirts of the capital city
- Explore the lesser-known, yet incredibly important, grapes of Monastrell and Bobal from DO Jumilla and DO Utiel-Requena
- Immerse yourself in the world of the luscious sweet wines of DO Malaga
- Jet to the Canary Islands to learn how grapes grow in a place where they technically shouldn't
Sherry
- Visit Sherry country and unravel the mystery of one of the world's great fortified wines
- Learn how sherry can be both an aperitif and digestif - and everything in between!

Duration:

2 Sessions (7 hours each) + 1 Session (Exam) on Schedule

Course assessment:

The exam is comprised of 50 multiple-choice questions. Students have 45 minutes to complete the exam. Passing score is 60%. There is no wine tasting component on the exam.

Entry Requirements:

There are no entry requirements for this qualification.
You must be of legal drinking age to participate in any alcohol tasting.
However, this is not a barrier to successfully completing the qualification.

Certification:

Upon passing, receive your well-deserved WSG Essentials certificate, acknowledging you have gained proficiency in the wines of Spain
